OLTD Program Outcome Addressed:
By engaging in a variety of discussions and having my ideas challenged I grew as a teacher and online educator. Having to defend myself through research or articles, as well as respond to the points provided by my classmates, was an invaluable experience. Furthermore, being able to contribute with my own experiences and knowledge was, in effect, the purpose of the assignment. Throughout the discussions I also had to be aware of how the tone and overall digital citizenship component were playing out. This not only provided me with an excellent opportunity to consider how I came across in an online environment, but it also provided me with the opportunity to question how I would guide students through the process of contributing to the learning of others while still maintaining an appropriate aura of decorum. Overall this was an excellent experience that caused me to consider just how much I help others.
By considering the outcomes of digital citizenship and mentorship I furthered my own understanding of what it means to be part of an online community. This experience was invaluable as I am certainly a member of a number of online communities, and I expect my students to also be members of online communities themselves. As the entire course was based on the idea of sharing, learning how to “share” ideas and resources without offending others will cause me to be a better educator.
- Share engagement strategies and tips
- Engage in mentoring and coaching with educational partners
- engage in building learning communities and communities of practice
- Consider responsibility, accountability and civility in online environments
