My learning journey is represented as a sandcastle that is under construction. This metaphor covers many of the aspects that encompass my learning journey, as well as my teaching journey. The sand castle is under construction, and will remain so forever, just as my teaching and learning journey will never be done. It's also important that it is built upon a strong foundation - in my case, an engineering degree and a teaching degree have created a good base from which to launch my teaching and learning journey. From a student perspective it's important that I provide care to my castle so that all parts are equally developed. Just as in the classroom I have to ensure that the academic, as well as the social-emotional, well being of my students is considered in my lessons.
The ocean can be used as a force of good in providing my sand castle with a lovely moat. It can also be destructive and break what I have created. In this manner, the ocean represents the external advice and forces that I will come across in my learning journey - everyone has an opinion and there is always a "new thing". Some of these are fantastic opportunities to improve my practice. Others are dangerous roads to travel down which may harm my future learning and my students' understanding. I will be utilizing the skills I learn in this program to decide which new teaching and learning practices and theories I will implement in my classroom
As my sand castle grows I will continue to improve my personal and professional practice.
