OLTD Program Outcome Addressed:
My Non-LMS build is an excellent example of some of the knowledge I have gained in OLTD504. This project allowed me to consider all of the various tools available online that could be used to support my classroom instruction. By focusing on Non-LMS tools I found that I was able to find excellent resources that were actually better developed then some LMS resources that perform the same function.
I've always been one to consider all tools before developing a course, however, through this assignment I have a much larger repertoire to choose from. I have begun to reconsider which tools (LMS or Non-LMS) I may use in a given situation. For example, the assignment submission tool in any LMS is very important to me, however, I have begun to consider utilizing Google Docs as the true holder of assignments and simply use the tool to indicate that an assignment is done and ready to be marked in my Google Drive. This fits with my overall teaching philosophy of providing students the opportunity to collaborate and share their work with a variety of audiences - Google Drive certainly allows for easy sharing!
I believe that this research has allowed me to make better decisions with respect to my organization and personalization in my classes. By choosing a tool to fit a goal, outcome or task I am able to ensure that students are better able to demonstrate their understanding in a variety of ways. The technology doesn't "bog them down" but instead allows them to better show what they have learned. I also have begun to meet the outcome surrounding the ability to critically assess and evaluate a variety of resources and how they would impact my classroom teaching. The entire basis of the assignment - choosing and analyzing these resources - made an excellent vehicle to achieve this learning outcome.
- Plan learning opportunities most suitable to the strengths and challenges of a variety of environments
- Develop and design intentional learning activities suitable for the appropriate environment and the learner
- Critically assess and evaluate resources for best practice in online learning
